10 Ways to Place the TV in Your Bedroom

Make space for the big black box in the bedroom while maintaining your decor. See how

Installing a TV in one's bedroom is quite a debatable topic – but for many, this choice is simple. Once the decision to bring in the TV has been made, the next conundrum rears its head: where to install it? We have put together various spaces that have fitted in televisions in ways that are sometimes straightforward, sometimes innovative.

1. This bedroom, with the luxury of verdant views, also has provision for flat-screen entertainment. See how the TV is framed by a wooden background, installed on an accent wall of stone. The smoothness of the wood contrasts with the roughness of bare stone, adding a sense of layering to a room that very much retains its minimalist atmosphere.

2. Similarly, the TV in this bedroom isn't the prisoner of a bulky cabinet, but hung on a wall with wooden shelves above and below it. The room's focus isn't concentrated on the TV and the sleek shelves and cabinets keep the ambience of the room light and subtle.

Tip: For a wall-mounted TV, consider hanging it at eye level. This a calculation based on your seated height plus the height of your seat cushion, the distance of the screen from your seat and the height of your TV screen. A simple way to measure this is to grab an inch-tape and measure your eye height from the floor and install the TV at the same height, on the wall. In general, the optimum viewing distance from the television is 2.5 times the diagonal length of screen. With high-definition televisions, however, it is recommended that the viewing distance should be 1.5 times the television screen's diagonal.

3. This TV with a silver frame blends in quite inconspicuously with a grey wall. The neutral colour scheme of the room and the TV installed high on the wall keep the mood relaxed and laid-back, without bringing too much attention to the gadget.

Tip: If your TV is installed high on a wall, make sure it is properly tilted downward so it's geared towards the proper eye level.

4. I like how the television is, in a sense, camouflaged in this gallery wall. Placed in the middle of several frames makes it seem like one among the others. This takes the focus away from the flat screen, making the room seem pristine, untouched by technology.

5. For some, a constant techno-presence in the room isn't pleasant, which is why hidden units come into play, like this one. Here, the TV here is placed inside a large cabinet, and can be hidden by sliding panels.

Wondering how to hide the TV?

6. This cabinet, on which the TV is perched, offers two functions. It has a TV lift installed in it that can retract the gadget when the homeowners don't want to watch the tube. And when the television is raised, it creates a partial division in the room, ensuring a cosy, snug niche for the bed, with only the TV in focus, and not the view.

7. This bedroom has floor-to-ceiling windows that provide sweeping views of the outdoors. The drop-down TV here ensures that the expansive sights are not obstructed – it can be pulled down when in use and motored up and hidden inside a ceiling cavity during the rest of the day.

Tip: Avoid placing your TV in front of a window, or opposite a east-facing window, as the light from the outdoors and the screen together can cause eye strain.

8. A rotating partition with a TV installed on it – what a slick, smart design! It also acts as a space-saving media unit for storing the TV's paraphernalia – DVDs, cables and speakers. I like how the TV viewing is flexible here – one can choose to watch it while lying down on the bed or sitting in the living-room area on the opposite side.

10. The TV is installed away from the bed and the viewer's line of sight, on a side wall. This allows unobstructed views out of the window. For such a placement, one can install the TV on a pivoted wall or ceiling mount, to move its position so it can be viewed from the bed as well as away from it.
